Old Buckenham Fund Day is raising funds for the following organisations:

South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band

The current Chairman and Musical Director, Mike Booty, formed the Band, based in Diss, in 1974. The Band’s motto is ‘Music is Fun’ and this shows through in their enthusiastic playing. The Band accepts any player, aged between 8 and 23, irrelevant of ability and does not hold auditions.

Playing with this Band gives members the encouragement to continue to study and to enjoy their music making and to provide that purpose for the hard work required. The Band also bridges the gap between school and adulthood and some professional musicians that have graduated through the Band may otherwise have given up before making music their career. The Band meets every Tuesday at the Diss Resource Centre in Shelfanger Road. The Band is completely independent and self-financing.

The Band was given The Queen's Award For Voluntary Service in 2006. This award recognises and rewards excellence in voluntary activities carried out by groups in the community and allows the band to use the ‘Unsung Heroes’ logo. We also became a registered charity in 2006.

We are always looking for new members and should you require further information on the band contact Phil McGahan on 01953 688295 or visit our website on www.snysb.org.uk.

Cultural Visit – August 2008
The Band have been invited to visit Singapore, Thailand and Borneo in August 2008. The primary aim is to visit Ban Naam Kem in the vicinity of Khao Lak to see how the area has recovered from the Tsunami and to give a concert in the new Community Centre. However, at the request of the District Governor of the Malaysian Rotary Clubs, the provisional programme has expanded to include musical workshops and public concerts with children in Singapore and Kota Kinabalu in Borneo.

Music defies international boundaries. It is our aim that from the human disaster of the tsunami the trip to Ban Naam Kem, Singapore and surrounding areas will provide cultural and educational exchanges, promote creativity, enhance the quality of life, make new friendships and nuture the wellbeing of both communities.
The visit is going to cost in the region of £1200 per person and we are actively raising funds to ensure that as many of our Band members can attend as possible. If you are able to help with fundraising, sponsorship or assist us in any way please contact Mike Booty on 01379 641580.

The Mediaeval Trust

The Mediaeval Trust was created by inspired individuals with the intention to educate, enlighten and inspire the public by bringing to life the truth of the late mediaeval world.

The Mediaeval Trust is highly successful in working with specialists and running many training courses including the ‘Building the Past ‘series, teaching individuals the techniques of traditional green oak timber framing, wattle & daub, reed & long straw thatching, keeping these rare skills alive and resulting in a full size 14th Century reproduction crown post roof & wall frames.

The ultimate aim for this Norfolk based registered charity is to fully recreate a living / working late mediaeval village as authentically as possible, to interact and support the local community and East Anglia as a whole.

The Mediaeval Life Centre will be constructed and managed by a workforce in the correct clothing of the period using museum quality replica tools and equipment.

The public will be able to learn & experience not only how buildings were built by our ancestors, but how people lived, farmed, worked, loved and died in the late middle ages.

The Mediaeval Trust is not only looking into and recreating the past, we aim to learn and to teach how to secure our future through environmentally renewable energy systems / construction methods utilized in our visitor centre & crop management in our farming, practically illustrating how we can learn from the past to look to the future.

We can work together to discover the ways & personalities of the past, look forward to the future with a deep understanding of our environment, by supporting and engaging with The Mediaeval Trust.
